Tips for handling coughs and colds

Tips for handling coughs and colds

As the weather turns colder, along come the winter bugs. Caring for babies and young children with coughs and colds can be challenging, but there are several things you can do to help ease their discomfort and speed up their recovery. Always speak to your GP if you have any concerns. Here are some general tips:

  1. Maintain good hygiene:
    • Wash your hands frequently, and encourage older children to do the same to prevent the spread of germs.
    • Ensure that your child's toys, dummies, and bottles are kept clean and sanitised.
  2. Keep them well-hydrated:
    • Offer breast milk or formula for young babies, or water for older babies and toddlers.
    • For older children, offer clear fluids, such as water, diluted fruit juices, or soups.
    • Avoid giving children under 1 honey, as it can be harmful.
  3. Use a humidifier:
    • A cool-mist humidifier in the child's room can help keep the air moist, which may alleviate congestion.
  4. Elevate the head of the cot or bed:
    • Placing a pillow or a rolled-up towel under the head of the mattress can help ease breathing and reduce coughing during sleep.
  5. Saline nasal drops:
    • Saline nasal drops can help clear congestion in infants. Use a bulb syringe to gently suction out mucus.
  6. Avoid over-the-counter cough and cold medications:
    • These medications are not recommended for children under the age of 4 and may not be safe or effective for older children.
  7. Encourage rest:
    • Make sure your child gets plenty of rest to aid in their recovery.
  8. Offer soothing foods for older babies or toddlers:
    • Warm foods like chicken soup, porridge, and applesauce can be soothing and nourishing.
    • Ice lollies or ice cream can soothe sore throats
  9. Monitor for warning signs:
    • Keep an eye on your child's symptoms. If they worsen or if you notice any concerning signs like high fever, difficulty breathing, or severe coughing, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
  10. Keep your child comfortable:
    • Dress them in lightweight, breathable clothing, and ensure the room temperature is comfortable.
  11. Soothe irritated skin:
    • Runny noses and dribble mouths can cause dry skin. Use a balm like Mum & You Face The Day Stick, made with natural ingredients to sooth irritated skin..
  12. Provide love and attention:
    • Extra cuddles and reassurance can go a long way in making your child feel better during illness.
